A crown (cap) is a single tooth restoration designed to cover a tooth completely and be permanently cemented. Crowns can be used for many applications. Materials consist of full gold, porcelain fused to metal, and all porcelain. Front teeth are primarily all porcelain crowns. With the new porcelain materials, we are able now as dentists to create very natural looking aesthetic restorations. This is usually a two step procedure. On the first appointment the tooth is prepared to be restored. The patient then wears a temporary crown for two to three weeks. At the second appointment the crown is tried in to ensure proper fit and cosmetics. When both the patient and the doctor are satisfied, the crown is cemented permanently.
